Now I thought I was doing pretty good with twitter.  After all I have over 10,000 followers since May 18th.  Roughly 6 weeks.

Most people would be happy with that.  But I want you to look at the top Trending Topic.

You might be like me and wonder what the heck is #moonfruit?

I honestly didn’t know and they have been around for ten years and they provide a website creation/hosting service.

Now you might be wondering (like I did) how did they get to be the #1 trending topic for two days in a row (so far)?

Simple they are giving away Free MacBook Pros! I will tell you how to get one later but for right now let me show what this has done for them and why they are dominating twitter.

First to win the MacBook Pro you have to be following them on twitter and this has resulted in their following growing by 30,000 in two days and still growing every minute of every day.

Now you might look at that and for some strange reason say, “That isn’t 30,000” as if 23,000 in two days wasn’t enough.

You are right that isn’t 30,000 because twittercounter.com doesn’t do live updates but here is a screen shot of their twitter account within minutes of capturing the counter you see above.

Now you see the 30,000 in two days and I guarantee that number is a lot higher now.

Remember this is being done totally within twitter.  Not with some big press release or a hugh email campaign or a ton of JV partners.

Now yes this will cost them roughly $20,000 because they are giving away 10 MacBook Pros and 10 – 5 year accounts with their service.  But in the long run it will most likely pay for itself because of the advertising they are getting on twitter.

I didn’t know what MoonFruit was and you might not have either but now at least 30,000 people do and have tweeted about it.

Do you want the chance to win a free MacBook Pro?

Here is what you have to do:

1.) You must be at least 16 years of age

2.) You must have a twitter account

3.) You must be following moontweet on twitter

4.) You must tweet at least once with #moonfruit in the tweet

That’s it! You can easily tweet it just by clicking on one of the twitter meme buttons at the top or bottom of this post.

By the way this only runs until July 10th so if your are going to try to get one do it now.

Now if you don’t have $20,000 to spend to get a promotion like this together you might want to take a look at the Twitter Online System it won’t build your followers at a rate of 30,000 in two days but it will get you going the right way.

For more detail you can see the give away page here

Not really certain that getting a whole bunch of freebie seekers is the way to get paying customers to any business
Getting 3,000 followers that are genuinely interested may have more ROI than 30,000 following to get a free Mac

      Hi Ami,

Thanks for the comment. Normally I would agree with your but Moonfruit’s business model is a free giveaway with an upsell. If 10% of those 30,000+ try the service and 10% that try upgrade (overall 1% conversion) they will have 300 new paying customers.

Now I don’t know if those stats are what they will get, only they know that but it a viable marketing strategy much in the same way that Micro Continuity just presented.

  10. It looks like an interesting way to gain followers, but like Ami am not sure about the viability of this in the longer term. This would make a good case study!

I too would love to see a case study of this about 3 months from now to see how it impacted their sales.

I do have to say that they are missing the bus on actually getting the people to their sign up page. They should be tweeting about the service they provide.

This “strategy” is really not much different to the one supermarkets use offering 2 for price of 1 or big discounts on certain lines to get customers into the shop.

Some will arrive just for the promotion, some will buy more while they are there, and others will remember the business and return later because if they offer that kind of deal they must be good.

I agree these are not targeted but as Randy highlights – it’s all a numbers game. Cheap word of mouth advertising and a small percentage take up will easily cover costs.

  14. I must confess, its the first time i have heard of moonfruit at all.

Thats a very good strategy, i will try this trick as well, though i dont have USD 20000 to spend, but I try some to give some of the useful products on offer.

Now for i should hurry and try and win myself a Macbook Pro

Not many of us do have $20,000 to spend on advertising and this will only work with certain business models. For example as an affiliate an expensive campaign like this would probably never pay for itself.

But their business model is free entry and continuity payments and I bet it pays for itself in no time.

If you are doing affiliate marketing you should try to giveaway something related to the niche you are marketing too.
