Black Hat SEO Basics

Search engine optimization (SEO) comes in several different forms. There is white hat SEO which is playing by the rules of any sites you are dealing with, it also tends to be more natural and organic. Black hat SEO is the opposite. It’s breaking any rules necessary, and covering your tracks to keep from getting caught. Anything a black hatter can do to increase their site rankings is fair game (to them). Grey hat is simply any combination of the two. In reality, most people are grey hat, even if the are intending to be black or white hat.

Black hat methods vary, and it’s possible to do some of them unintentionally. So, does that make you a black hat SEO person? Not necessarily. While the search engines may penalize you if you are caught, it’s really a matter of intention. Ultimately, while black hat SEO may give you an artificially high ranking, which is better than a low ranking. However, by trying to game the system, you are the most susceptible to any changes to a search engine’s algorithms. In other words, black hatters may be in the top few listings one day, and completely de-indexed the next.

The problem many people in internet marketing have is that they aren’t always sure if what they are doing is considered black hat SEO or not. While there are many different things you can do for search engine optimization, there are a few basic practices to help you stay on the white hat side of the fence.

1. Stop stuffing. Your keywords that is. A common mistake is to assume that if using your keyword a few times will boost your rankings, then using them even more will boost your rankings more. This may be true, but only to a certain point. The first problem is that any of your visitors will find your message difficult to understand because too much repetition sounds unnatural. Secondly, any improvement in rank will likely be temporary.

2. Do not use invisible text. This is a variation of keyword stuffing. What the black hatter does is use the same color for both the text and the background for any words they want to hide. While this may make for a better experience for visitors, the search engines see it as cheating and will penalize you for it if you get caught.

3. Avoid doorway pages. In this sense we are talking about fake pages that only exist for the purposes of attracting search engine crawlers. There is no intention of a living, breathing human being seeing these pages. Again, you may see a temporary increase in your rankings, but could be dropped from the listings completely when the search engines find out.

4. Read and follow terms of service (TOS). Just about any site you use to help boost your rankings will have a TOS. It is up to you to read and follow them to the best of your ability. Once you start looking for loopholes or justifications, you are moving into black hat SEO territory. So, if that happens, take that as a sign to do the right thing.

Doing the above things will go a long way towards avoiding black hat SEO methods. This is important because it will help you to naturally rank higher. You also won’t have to worry about dropping in the rankings if you’re caught doing something wrong.

How To Do A Backlink Check On Yahoo

Building backlinks (incoming links) to your website is one of the most important activities that you can do when it comes to improving your SEO (search engine optimization) and search engine rank. So, if you’ve been diligently working on a link building, you’re also probably curious to figure out how many of your links have been detected by the various search engines. This article will explain one simple method of how you can do a backlink check using Yahoo.

For those of you who are new to link building and the concept, here is a very brief description of what it is and why you want to do it. Basically, the search engines rank every website that is on the internet. There are many things that go into the result of your website’s final score, but webmasters do know one fact for sure. Something that will really bring up your website in rank is having many quality backlinks (links coming from another site to your site). Search engines use this criteria to judge just how good your site is. If you have other sites linking to you, then it must mean that you have valuable information that should be ranked highly. And if your site is ranked high, it means that you will come up first in the search engines when someone does a search for whatever term that is relevant to your website/business. And this translates to you getting more traffic, more sales and more income.

So, you go through the many methods of acquiring backlinks (submitting to directories, requesting links, submitting to article directories, etc.). This is usually time-consuming and frustrating work but it does pay off if you are consistent and you keep track of your progress. That’s where the backlink check comes in.

To check your backlinks on Yahoo, just type in “site:www.yoursitename.com” into the Yahoo search engine. Then click “web search”. You will see the results further down where it shows you your “Inlinks”. Just click on this tab and you will see the details about the links that are coming to you. If you want to filter the results even further to make sure you are viewing only the links from other websites (and not within your own), then just click on the drop-down menu that says “from all pages” and change it to “except from this domain”. Now you will see all of the links that are coming to you. You can play around with the other drop-down options as well.

So that’s how you can do a very general backlink check on Yahoo. To get more detail on the links, just click on each item and check the keywords that are being linked to – this can also give you more information about what keywords are working well and more popular and how to go about your future link building efforts.

No matter which school of thought you graduated from one thing is clear: the more searches a keyword phrase gets the higher the competition will be and the harder it will be to rank for that particular keyword. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t try it (many online marketers really don’t know that much about using keywords effectively so you can rank well for a competitive keyword if you know what you’re doing).

The biggest favor you can do yourself is to learn the skills needed to fully optimize your keyword marketing strategy. Knowledge is power and no where is that more true than online. Learn the tricks to finding those keywords that will bring all the qualified customers to your offers that you can handle and you can make money for the rest of your life.

With this tool you can start with a broad search of a particular keyword and then drill down to find some less competitive keywords that you can use in your marketing efforts.

Please don’t set yourself up for failure by not taking the time to properly use keyword marketing techniques to drive a lot of very qualified traffic to your website. If you learn to do this you will never have to pay for traffic again.

4 Questions To Ask Before Choosing An SEO Service

SEO, short for search engine optimization, is becoming increasingly necessary for any website that wants to be seen whenever people conduct an online search. At the basic level, SEO is nothing more than making a website look attractive for the automated crawlers the search engines use. In practice, however, SEO can be an involved an time-consuming task. That’s one reason why there are so many people offering search engine optimization services. Such services save time, but how can you be sure any particular SEO company knows what it’s doing? Here are a few things you should find out before hiring anyone to run an SEO campaign for you.

1. Do they make outrageous claims? This one can be a little tricky because you want an SEO company to get your site to rank as high as possible. So, what constitutes an outrageous claim? If they say they can guarantee a #1 listing in the search engines, say you can stay in the top spot, or tell you it can be done in a few hours, then you may wish to look elsewhere. Of course, there’s always a chance they could do these things, but remember that you will always have competition trying to get ahead of you, and that’s the one thing no SEO provider can control.

2. Get references. Start by asking any people that you personally know who have used the SEO service you are considering. If they haven’t used the same one, ask about the service they chose and what their experiences were. Next, go online and look for any reviews or feedback left by previous or current customers. If you see a general trend where people recommend the service, that’s a good sign you may want to do business with that company. On the other hand, you need to be careful of negative reviews as there is always the possibility they are fake and were created by a competing firm.

3. What kind of maintenance do they provide, if any? As mentioned, your site has competitors. Also, the higher you rank, the tougher the competition will be. That’s why SEO is not a one time “set and forget” procedure; it’s an ongoing thing. Be sure to ask what type of upkeep packages the SEO service offers. You will most likely have to pay a monthly subscription fee, but that’s okay. If they do not offer any type of maintenance plan, then they are not a good choice for the long-term success of your website.

4. How is their customer service? The good news is that you can get a good idea of this before you spend any money. Simply send the SEO service an email asking a question. Then wait to see how long it takes to get a response, how knowledgeable the response is, and how polite they are. If any of these are not to your satisfaction, then move on to another company.
